- UKAS scope. Accreditation is specific to named tests. A laboratory can be accredited for water chemistry and not for legionella. The schedule, not the badge, is the proof.
- Method. The reference method is culture to BS EN ISO 11731, which takes around ten days and counts live bacteria in cfu/L. Some laboratories also offer qPCR, a faster DNA screen that is useful for triage but not a like-for-like replacement.
- Turnaround. Know it before you need it. Ten days is a long wait when you are investigating an out-of-range temperature.
- Kit and postage. Most laboratories supply sterile bottles with the neutraliser already inside, plus return packaging; check whether return carriage is included in the price.

Before you commit, verify the laboratory yourself. Find its UKAS accreditation number, open its Schedule of Accreditation on the register at ukas.com, and search the PDF for “Legionella”. A genuine scope names legionella against water, usually with the ISO 11731 method. When we built the directory we checked more laboratories than we list: several marketing themselves as UKAS-accredited had no legionella scope on their schedule, so they are not in it. That is what the check is for.
When local genuinely does help
Two situations reward proximity. In an urgent investigation, a suspected case or a result above the action levels, a local laboratory can sometimes take a same-day courier and start the culture hours earlier. And if you want someone to come to site and take the samples for you, that is a different service: a water treatment or hygiene contractor visiting your premises, with the samples still going to a laboratory afterwards.
